How the tracking works
The DOG 6 uses the same kind of mobile network as a phone (LTE Cat-M1) and connects automatically to whichever of Telstra, Optus or Vodafone has the strongest signal. You follow your dog in the Tractive app (iOS 16 or later, Android 9 or later). In live tracking mode the location updates every 2 to 3 seconds, far more often than trackers that update every 30 to 60 seconds. The rest of the time it updates every 2 to 10 minutes, and you can set “power-saving zones”, such as your home Wi-Fi area, where it stops actively tracking to save battery.
You can set up to five virtual fences (“safe zones”). If your dog leaves one, everyone linked to the account gets a phone notification straight away. The finder mode makes the tracker flash a brighter light and play a louder sound than the DOG 4, which helps when you are searching at dusk, at dawn or in bad weather.
Health monitoring
The DOG 6 measures your dog’s resting heart rate and breathing rate while it sleeps or rests, builds up a normal range over time, and alerts you if the readings change noticeably. This is most useful for older dogs, where early heart disease, breathing problems or pain may not show any obvious signs.
It also tracks barking, alerting you to unusual increases or decreases that could point to stress, anxiety, something going on at home, or pain. Together with activity and sleep tracking, this gives you more health information than other consumer GPS trackers sold in Australia that we are aware of.
Tractive’s Danger Reports let owners flag nearby hazards, such as poison baits, unsafe ground or wildlife, and warn other Tractive users in the area. That is genuinely useful in Australian suburbs and semi-rural areas, where baiting is a real risk.
Which dogs it suits
Tractive recommends the DOG 6 for dogs of 4 kg and over. At 39 g it is barely noticeable on a medium or large dog and fine on small dogs of 4 to 8 kg. It is most useful for energetic breeds that are known for escaping or roaming, such as Siberian Huskies, Kelpies, Jack Russell Terriers, Beagles and Border Collies. The health monitoring also makes it worthwhile for older dogs of any breed, where spotting heart or breathing changes early can make a real difference to treatment.
Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds benefit from the breathing-rate monitoring, which can pick up worsening breathing in warmer months. It is not suitable for dogs under 4 kg because of its weight.
Durability and battery
The IPX7 rating means it survives being under 1 metre of water for 30 minutes, which covers rain, swimming in shallow water, the beach and bath time. The plastic case handles normal knocks, and the redesigned collar clips hold on much better than the DOG 4’s rubber mount, even during rough play or running through scrub.
Battery life is the biggest upgrade. Tractive quotes up to 14 days with power-saving zones turned on, or about 6 days without them. Owner reports suggest 7 to 10 days between charges for a typical suburban dog that spends 2 to 3 hours outside each day with a power-saving zone at home. It charges in about 2 hours from any USB-C cable, replacing the DOG 4’s special magnetic charger.
Using it in Australia
The DOG 6 works on the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone networks in Australian cities and most regional areas. A simple rule: if your mobile phone works reliably where you live and walk, the tracker will too. In remote areas more than about 50 km from a major town, coverage may drop in and out.
You can buy it from Amazon Australia (ASIN B0D6Z7KPBP), JB Hi-Fi, or Tractive’s own website, which ships to Australia with local warranty support.
Subscription pricing for Australian owners (checked October 2026): AU$16 a month on a 1-year plan ($192 billed yearly), AU$12 a month on a 2-year plan ($288), or AU$8 a month on a 5-year plan ($480). Every plan includes coverage in more than 175 countries, all features including heart-rate and bark monitoring, and unlimited location history.
What it really costs
The tracker itself costs about $81 (Amazon Australia, October 2026), and it needs no special accessories. The subscription is the main cost:
1-year plan, kept for 2 years: $81 tracker + $384 subscription = $465 ($19.38 a month)
2-year plan: $81 tracker + $288 subscription = $369 ($15.38 a month)
5-year plan: $81 tracker + $480 paid up front = $561 over 5 years ($9.35 a month)
The longer the plan, the lower the monthly cost: the 5-year plan works out at about half the monthly cost of the 1-year plan, but you pay $480 up front. Over the life of the tracker the subscription costs far more than the device, so factor it into the decision.
Our verdict
The Tractive DOG 6 is the tracker we would suggest for most Australian owners who want one. Fast live tracking, virtual fences, health monitoring, USB-C charging and a much longer battery life make it a clear step up from the DOG 4. You do have to pay for the subscription, but the all-in cost is about $15 a month on the 2-year plan, or about $9 a month if you commit to five years.
Breeds that are known for escaping or roaming, and where a GPS tracker makes the most sense, include the Siberian Husky, Beagle and Jack Russell Terrier.

Which mobile networks does the Tractive DOG 6 use in Australia?+
It connects to the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone networks through a built-in SIM that automatically picks the strongest signal. Coverage is the same as you would expect from a mobile phone across cities and most regional areas. There is nothing to set up.
How long does the battery really last in Australian conditions?+
Tractive says up to 14 days with power-saving zones and up to 6 days without. Owner reviews suggest 7 to 10 days for a typical suburban dog that spends 2 to 3 hours outside each day with a power-saving zone at home. Hot days above 35C and frequent use of live tracking shorten it. A full charge over USB-C takes about 2 hours.
Do you need a Tractive subscription, and how much does it cost?+
Yes. Tracking and health monitoring don't work without a subscription. Australian pricing (October 2026) is AU$16 a month on a 1-year plan, AU$12 a month on a 2-year plan, or AU$8 a month on a 5-year plan. Every plan includes coverage in more than 175 countries, live tracking, safe zones, heart-rate and bark monitoring, and unlimited location history. Over two years on the 2-year plan, including the tracker, the total is about $369.
What health data does the DOG 6 track that the DOG 4 didn't?+
The DOG 6 adds resting heart rate, breathing rate and bark monitoring, none of which the DOG 4 had. It takes these readings while your dog sleeps or rests, learns what is normal, and alerts you to changes that could point to early heart disease, breathing problems, pain or stress. That makes it particularly useful for older dogs and breeds prone to heart conditions.
What does the Tractive DOG 6 cost over two years in Australia?+
The tracker costs about $81 (Amazon Australia, October 2026). A 2-year subscription is AU$12 a month for 24 months, or $288. That's $369 over two years, about $15.38 a month, for live GPS tracking with health monitoring. It charges with any standard USB-C cable, so there are no special chargers to buy.
