We checked each food against the manufacturer's published nutritional information and Australian retailer listings. To be included, a food needed joint support (glucosamine, chondroitin or an equivalent such as green-lipped mussel), controlled calcium and phosphorus levels, and larger kibble that encourages chewing. All four were available from Amazon AU, Pet Circle and Petstock when we checked prices in October 2026. We haven't run our own feeding trials.
Large breeds such as Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Rottweilers burn energy more slowly than small dogs, but their joints take far more strain. Deep-chested breeds also benefit from larger kibble that makes them chew rather than gulp. This guide compares four large-breed foods on the ingredients that matter most for big dogs, using each manufacturer’s published nutritional information.
What we looked for
Each food in this guide was checked against the manufacturer’s published information and Australian retailer listings. To be included, a food needed:
Joint support: glucosamine and chondroitin, or a natural source such as green-lipped mussel, to help maintain joint cartilage.
Controlled calcium and phosphorus: balanced mineral levels suited to large dogs.
Large kibble: bigger pieces that encourage chewing and slow eating. Gulping food and air is one of the risk factors for bloat.
The four foods compared (October 2026)
| Food | Main protein | Protein | Joint support | Bag | Price per kg | Daily cost (35 kg dog) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Canin Maxi Adult | Dried poultry protein | 26% | Glucosamine and chondroitin (amounts not stated), plus omega-3 | 15 kg | $10.53 | $4.10–$4.60 |
| Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed | Chicken | 20.5% | Glucosamine 300 ppm, chondroitin 550 ppm | 12 kg | about $12.58 | $4.20–$5.05 |
| Advance Adult Large Breed | Poultry meal | 25% | Green-lipped mussel | 15 kg | about $9.27 | $2.64–$3.34 |
| Black Hawk Large Breed | Chicken meal | 23% | Glucosamine, chondroitin and emu oil | 20 kg | about $7.50 | $2.33–$2.93 |
1. Royal Canin Maxi Adult: the widely recommended all-rounder
Best for: owners who want a vet-recommended, easy-to-find food
Royal Canin Maxi Adult is made for dogs of 26 to 44 kg. It uses highly digestible proteins to help absorption and reduce stool volume, and includes nutrients to support joints and heart.
Key figures:
Protein: 26% | Fat: 17% | Fibre: 1.3% | Omega-3: 7.8 g/kg (including 4 g/kg EPA and DHA)
Joints, skin and coat: Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) supports skin and coat. Glucosamine comes from hydrolysed crustaceans and chondroitin from hydrolysed cartilage.
Our take: Popular for good reason. The large kibble encourages fast eaters to chew, and it has the highest protein of the four. It’s imported and mid-priced, and grains make up much of the recipe.

2. Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed Adult: clearest joint-support figures
Best for: less active dogs and owners who want to know exactly what they’re getting
Hill’s states its glucosamine (300 ppm) and chondroitin (550 ppm) levels on the label, which few brands do. It keeps calories moderate to help prevent weight gain, since extra weight puts more strain on the joints.
Key figures:
Protein: 20.5% (min) | Fat: 12% (min) | Energy: 363 kcal per cup
Skin, coat and digestion: Vitamin E and omega-6 support skin and coat. Hill’s ActivBiome+ prebiotic blend feeds the good bacteria in the gut.
Our take: A good fit for less active large dogs, such as older Labradors. The moderate fat and protein help keep weight in check, which protects mobility as your dog ages. It has the lowest protein and the highest price per kilo of the four.

3. Advance Adult Large Breed Chicken with Rice: Australian-made value
Best for: owners who want good joint support at a fair price
Advance is made in regional NSW. Its main point of difference is freeze-dried green-lipped mussel, a natural source of omega-3 and glycosaminoglycans that support cartilage.
Key figures (advancepet.com.au):
Protein: 25% | Fat: 16% | Fibre: 1.6%
Digestion: Prebiotic fibre (fructooligosaccharides) and beet pulp support gut health.
Our take: A practical middle ground. Joint support, local manufacturing and reliable stock, at about $9.27 a kilo, roughly a quarter less than Hill’s.

4. Black Hawk Large Breed Adult: best value, wheat-free
Best for: active dogs and owners who want a wheat-free food on a budget
Black Hawk is wheat-free and Australian-made. Its larger kibble is designed for big jaws and slows down eating.
Key figures (blackhawkpetcare.com):
Protein: 23% | Fat: 14% | Fibre: 4.5% (max)
Joints and skin: Australian emu oil, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, plus added glucosamine and chondroitin. The base ingredients are chicken meal, rice, oats and fish meal, with no wheat or corn.
Our take: The cheapest per kilo of the four, in the biggest bag. A good choice for active large dogs, or dogs that don’t tolerate wheat. Emu oil is an unusual and genuine point of difference.

Common questions about feeding large dogs
What is bloat, and how can food help prevent it?
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV) is a life-threatening emergency in which a deep-chested dog’s stomach fills with gas and can twist. Eating or drinking too fast is one of the risk factors. Large-breed kibble, which is hard to swallow whole, and a slow-feeder bowl both help slow your dog down. If your dog shows signs of bloat (a swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up, restlessness), go to a vet immediately.
Can a large-breed food reduce future vet bills?
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint problem in large dogs and often needs ongoing pain relief as they age. A food with glucosamine and chondroitin supports cartilage, and keeping your dog lean is one of the most effective ways to protect its joints. Food alone won’t prevent arthritis, but it is a sensible part of looking after a big dog’s joints.
Why do calcium and phosphorus matter?
Large-breed puppies grow fast, and too much calcium can make bones grow faster than the surrounding tissue can keep up with, contributing to joint problems such as hip dysplasia. That’s why large-breed puppy foods carefully control these minerals. Adult large-breed foods also keep mineral levels balanced for big frames.
Large breeds this guide is written for include the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd.

What is bloat (GDV) and how can I reduce the risk?+
Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is a life-threatening emergency where a deep-chested dog's stomach fills with gas and can twist. Eating or drinking too quickly is one risk factor. Large-breed kibble that's hard to swallow whole, plus a slow-feeder bowl, helps slow your dog down. If you see signs of bloat, see a vet immediately.
Can large-breed food reduce vet bills later in life?+
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint problem in large dogs, and it often needs ongoing pain relief in later years. A food with glucosamine and chondroitin supports cartilage, and keeping your dog lean protects the joints even more. Food alone won't prevent arthritis, but it helps.
Why do calcium and phosphorus levels matter for large dogs?+
Large-breed puppies grow quickly, and too much calcium can make bones grow faster than the surrounding tissue, contributing to problems like hip dysplasia. Large-breed foods control these minerals carefully so bones develop at a steady, healthy pace.
Which large-breed dog food is best value per kilo in Australia?+
Of the four we compare, Black Hawk Large Breed is the cheapest at about $7.50 a kilo (20 kg bag), followed by Advance Large Breed at about $9.27, Royal Canin Maxi Adult at $10.53 and Hill's Science Diet at about $12.58 (October 2026). Both Black Hawk and Advance are made in Australia and include joint support.
Can I feed standard adult kibble to a large dog?+
You can, but standard adult kibble isn't designed for big dogs. It usually lacks added joint support and has smaller pieces that are easier to gulp, which can raise the risk of bloat. A large-breed food is the better choice from puppyhood onwards.
