What’s in it
According to Advance’s own product page (October 2026), Advance Adult Large Breed contains 25% protein and 16% fat. The main protein is poultry meal, mostly chicken: a rendered, dried protein that is more concentrated by weight than fresh chicken. That protein level is in the middle of the large-breed range: above Hill’s Science Diet (20.5%) and Black Hawk (23%), and just below Royal Canin Maxi Adult (26%).
The carbohydrates come from sorghum, rice flour, rice and barley. Rice appears twice (as rice flour and as rice), which is a common way of splitting one ingredient so that each part sits lower on the list. As a result the grains together likely make up more of the food than the poultry meal listed first. Plenty of brands do this, but it’s worth knowing.
Joint support: green-lipped mussel
The standout ingredient is freeze-dried green-lipped mussel powder (Perna canaliculus). Green-lipped mussel naturally contains glycosaminoglycans, omega-3 fatty acids and chondroitin, the building blocks of healthy cartilage. Advance doesn’t say how much mussel is in the food, so you can’t compare its strength directly with Hill’s, which states 300 ppm glucosamine and 550 ppm chondroitin. Advance’s product page does list minimum glucosamine and chondroitin levels, and including mussel at all is a good sign.
Skin, coat and overall health
Advance highlights added vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports the immune system, plus omega-3, omega-6 and zinc for healthy skin and coat. The recipe also includes the amino acid methionine.
Digestion
Advance adds fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fibre) and dried beet pulp to support good gut bacteria. The manufacturer says this leads to fewer, firmer stools, which makes daily clean-up easier.
What it costs per day
At about $139 for a 15 kg bag ($9.27 a kilo, October 2026), Advance is good value among the better-known large-breed foods. Estimated daily cost at normal activity:
25 kg dog: about 220-280 g a day = $2.04-$2.60 a day
30 kg dog: about 255-320 g a day = $2.36-$2.97 a day
35 kg dog: about 285-360 g a day = $2.64-$3.34 a day
40 kg dog: about 315-395 g a day = $2.92-$3.66 a day
50 kg dog: about 370-465 g a day = $3.43-$4.31 a day
A 15 kg bag lasts about 32 to 68 days, depending on your dog’s size. For a typical 35 kg dog that is about $960 to $1,220 a year, noticeably less than Royal Canin Maxi Adult (about $1,500 to $1,680) or Hill’s Science Diet (about $1,540 to $1,840).
How it compares
Royal Canin Maxi Adult ($10.53/kg): Royal Canin has slightly more protein (26% against 25%), states its omega-3 levels (7.8 g/kg) and gets its joint support from hydrolysed crustaceans and cartilage. It’s imported and costs about 14% more per kilo, and it doesn’t contain green-lipped mussel.
Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed ($12.58/kg): Hill’s gives the clearest joint-support figures (300 ppm glucosamine, 550 ppm chondroitin) and includes its ActivBiome+ prebiotic blend. It has the lowest protein (20.5%), the highest price per kilo, and a smaller 12 kg bag. Advance costs about 26% less per kilo.
Black Hawk Large Breed ($7.50/kg): Black Hawk is the cheapest per kilo and comes in a bigger 20 kg bag. It is wheat-free, includes emu oil and added glucosamine and chondroitin, but has less protein (23% against 25%). Advance’s green-lipped mussel is its main point of difference.
Where to buy it in Australia
Advance is made in regional NSW by Mars Petcare Australia, so it doesn’t rely on imports the way Royal Canin (France) and Hill’s (USA) do. It is stocked nationally at Amazon Australia (ASIN B07GD8CGPX), Pet Circle, Petstock, Petbarn and independent pet shops, and comes in 15 kg and 20 kg bags. No recalls have been recorded for this product (checked March 2026).
Yearly cost
For a typical 35 kg dog over 12 months:
Food: about $960-$1,220 a year (based on $139 per 15 kg bag, 285-360 g a day)
Per month: about $80-$102
Per day: about $2.64-$3.34
Compared on price per kilogram (October 2026): Black Hawk about $7.50, Advance about $9.27, Royal Canin $10.53 and Hill’s about $12.58. Advance is a strong middle ground: cheaper than the imported brands, with genuine joint support, if you’re happy with moderate protein.
Breeds that suit this food include large, heavy dogs such as the Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler and Boxer.

Is Advance dog food made in Australia?+
Yes. Advance is made in regional NSW by Mars Petcare Australia. Because it's made here, it doesn't face the import delays that can affect Royal Canin (made in France) and Hill's Science Diet (made in the USA).
Can large-breed puppies eat Advance Adult Large Breed?+
No. This food is made for adult large and giant dogs from 12 months old. Feeding an adult food to a growing puppy skips the careful calcium and phosphorus balance that large-breed puppies need for safe bone growth. Advance makes a separate Large Breed Puppy food for that.
Is green-lipped mussel as good as glucosamine for joints?+
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a whole-food source of glycosaminoglycans, chondroitin and omega-3, so it supplies a wider range of joint-support compounds than glucosamine on its own. Advance doesn't say how much mussel is in the food, though, whereas Hill's Science Diet states 300 ppm glucosamine and 550 ppm chondroitin. If you want exact figures, Hill's is clearer.
How much does Advance Large Breed cost per day for a 35 kg dog?+
At about $139 for a 15 kg bag, feeding a 35 kg dog costs about $2.64 to $3.34 a day, or $960 to $1,220 a year. That is well below Hill's Science Diet (about $4.20 to $5.05 a day) and Royal Canin Maxi Adult (about $4.10 to $4.60 a day), and a little above Black Hawk Large Breed, which is the cheapest per kilo.
Where can I buy Advance Large Breed in Australia?+
It's widely available through Amazon Australia, Pet Circle, Petstock, Petbarn, independent pet shops and some vet clinics. Because it's made in Australia, stock is usually reliable.
