What’s in it
Royal Canin Maxi Adult contains 26% protein, 17% fat, 1.3% fibre and 6.6% ash as fed. Allowing for the roughly 10% moisture in dry food, that works out to about 29% protein, 19% fat and an estimated 44 to 49% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis. It provides 333 kcal per cup.
That protein level meets the AAFCO and FEDIAF standards for adult maintenance, but it is lower than some competitors, such as Advance Large Breed (25%), and well below foods made for working dogs. Part of the protein figure comes from corn gluten meal and wheat gluten. These plant proteins raise the percentage without supplying the complete range of amino acids that meat protein does. If you want to maintain muscle in a very active dog, keep that in mind.
The omega-3 content of 7.8 g/kg, including 4 g/kg of EPA and DHA from fish oil, is a real positive. It supports healthy skin and coat and helps reduce inflammation, which matters for the joints of heavy dogs.
Ingredients
The Australian recipe (from royalcanin.com/au, February 2026) lists: dehydrated poultry proteins, rice, maize, animal fats (poultry), wheat, barley, hydrolysed animal proteins (poultry), maize gluten, wheat gluten, beet pulp, minerals, sunflower oil, yeast products, fish oil, vitamins, algal oil (Schizochytrium sp.), hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), amino acids, hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin).
Dried poultry protein is listed first, which is a good sign, as it is a concentrated source of animal protein. But taken together, the grains (rice, maize, wheat, barley, maize gluten and wheat gluten) clearly outweigh the animal protein. That is normal for mainstream dry food and is nutritionally fine, but it means most of the energy in this food comes from cereals rather than meat.
Worth noting: algal oil is a sustainable source of DHA, and hydrolysed crustaceans and hydrolysed cartilage supply glucosamine and chondroitin to support the joints of dogs carrying 26 to 44 kg. Beet pulp is a moderate source of fibre that supports gut health and firm stools.
What’s missing: there are no named probiotics (despite the focus on digestive health in the marketing) and no fresh or whole meat. Some overseas versions list generic “animal fats”, but the Australian version names poultry fat, which is better.
Which dogs it suits
Maxi Adult is made for dogs of 26 to 44 kg, which covers most popular large breeds in Australia. The large kibble encourages dogs to chew rather than gulp, which helps breeds such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers that tend to eat too fast and get an upset stomach.
The joint-support ingredients and moderate calorie density make it a sensible choice for breeds prone to joint problems, such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Golden Retrievers. The moderate fat level also helps with weight control in breeds that put on weight easily, especially Labradors.
It is not suitable for puppies under 15 months (use Maxi Puppy), dogs over 44 kg (use a giant-breed food), dogs under 26 kg (use a medium-breed food), dogs with a confirmed grain allergy or sensitivity, or dogs over 5 years (switch to Maxi Adult 5+). Our breed suggestions are based on size, energy and joint load, not on breed-specific feeding trials.
What it costs per day
At about $158 for a 15 kg bag, it costs $10.53 per kilogram. Royal Canin’s recommended daily amounts by adult weight, at normal activity:
26 kg dog: about 310-340 g a day = $3.30-$3.60 a day
30 kg dog: about 345-385 g a day = $3.60-$4.05 a day
35 kg dog: about 390-435 g a day = $4.10-$4.60 a day
40 kg dog: about 430-480 g a day = $4.50-$5.05 a day
44 kg dog: about 460-515 g a day = $4.85-$5.40 a day
So a 15 kg bag lasts about 29 to 48 days, depending on the dog’s size and activity. For a typical 35 kg dog that is about $1,500 to $1,680 a year. That places Royal Canin in the mid-to-upper price range for large-breed dry food: dearer than supermarket brands and Australian brands such as Advance and Black Hawk, but cheaper per kilogram than Hill’s Science Diet.
Where to buy it in Australia
Royal Canin Maxi Adult is one of the easiest large-breed foods to find in Australia. It is sold through Amazon Australia (ASIN B002DPMQSO), Pet Circle, Petstock, Petbarn, independent pet shops and vet clinics. It is made by Royal Canin (a Mars Petcare company) and distributed here by Mars Petcare Australia.
Supply is reliable and several retailers compete on price, so you can often get a discount through the Pet Circle and Petstock subscription programs. No recalls have been recorded for this product (checked February 2026).
Yearly cost
For a typical 35 kg dog over 12 months:
Food: about $1,500-$1,680 a year (based on $158 per 15 kg bag, 390-435 g a day)
Per month: about $125-$140
Per day: about $4.10-$4.60
Compared on price per kilogram (October 2026): Black Hawk Large Breed is about $7.50/kg, Advance Large Breed about $9.27/kg, Royal Canin Maxi Adult $10.53/kg and Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed about $12.58/kg. Royal Canin sits in the middle: dearer than the two Australian brands, but with wider vet backing and added joint support.
Our verdict
Royal Canin Maxi Adult is a reliable, easy-to-find food with genuine thought behind the recipe. The joint support, chelated minerals and omega-3 are real benefits for large dogs. The grain-heavy recipe and moderate protein stop it from being a top pick. Its strengths are availability and vet confidence: Australian vet clinics stock and recommend it, which matters if you value professional advice over a purist ingredient list. A sound choice for most large adult dogs.

Is Royal Canin Maxi Adult grain-free?+
No. It contains several grains, including rice, maize, wheat, barley, maize gluten and wheat gluten, which provide energy and most of the carbohydrate. Dogs with a confirmed grain allergy or sensitivity need a grain-free food. For other dogs, current veterinary opinion is that grain-inclusive diets are nutritionally fine.
How long does a 15 kg bag last for a large dog?+
For a 35 kg dog at normal activity, about 34 to 38 days at the recommended 390 to 435 g a day. For a 26 kg dog, about 44 to 48 days. For a 44 kg dog, about 29 to 33 days. It varies with activity level, metabolism and whether you also feed wet food. Royal Canin recommends splitting the daily amount into two meals.
How much does it cost per day to feed Royal Canin Maxi Adult in Australia?+
At about $158 for a 15 kg bag, it costs from $3.30 a day for a 26 kg dog to $5.40 a day for a 44 kg dog at normal activity. For a typical 35 kg dog that is about $1,500 to $1,680 a year. Per kilogram it is cheaper than Hill's Science Diet but dearer than Advance and Black Hawk.
Does Royal Canin Maxi Adult contain joint support?+
Yes. It contains glucosamine (from hydrolysed crustaceans) and chondroitin (from hydrolysed cartilage), which help maintain joint cartilage. That matters for large dogs, whose joints carry a lot of weight. The amounts aren't listed on the label, though, so if your dog needs treatment-level joint support, ask your vet about a separate supplement.
Is the Australian Royal Canin Maxi Adult different from overseas versions?+
Yes. The Australian recipe (from royalcanin.com/au) lists dehydrated poultry proteins first and names poultry fat, sunflower oil and algal oil. Overseas versions may list maize first and use generic animal fats and soya oil. Always check the Australian product page or the bag itself, because ingredients and regulations differ between countries.
