Quick verdict
The Lola is a reasonable gel mat for indoor use, crates and dogs that won’t climb onto a raised bed, and the large sizes are a plus. It’s new, with no owner reviews yet. Petbarn itself says the cooling effect weakens once the room is above 35°C, which matters in an Australian heatwave. For an outdoor dog, a raised bed is the more reliable choice. For a dog that chews, skip gel mats altogether.
What it is and how it works
The mat contains a gel layer that feels cool when weight presses on it, so there’s no need to refrigerate it or plug it in. Petbarn says the mat has channels that keep the gel evenly spread, plus reinforced edging and a supportive bolster. The surface is water resistant and wipes clean.
Gel mats work by absorbing heat from your dog’s body. They feel coolest in the first stretch of a rest and gradually warm up. Moving the mat into shade, or letting it rest unused for a while, helps it recover. Petbarn’s care notes say not to freeze or heat it, and not to leave it in prolonged direct sunlight.

What the retailer’s own notes say
Petbarn’s product page includes care and safety notes that buyers should read:
- “The cooling effect will weaken if the room temperature exceeds 35°C.”
- Don’t let pets chew the mat, as it may be harmful if swallowed. Take care with pets that have sharp nails.
- Don’t use it near open flames, excessive heat or prolonged direct sunlight. Don’t freeze or heat it.
- It “assists with temperature comfort only and does not prevent overheating”. Always provide fresh water and shade.
- Wipe it clean with a damp cloth, and dry it flat in shade.
What owners report
There are no owner reviews yet. This is a new Petbarn range, and the product page showed no ratings on 2 November 2026. We can’t tell you how the gel or the edging holds up over a summer, so our durability rating is cautious. We’ll update this review once owners have had it through a summer.
How it compares
| Product | Type | Price checked 2 Nov 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juni Lola (XLarge, 110×60 cm) | Gel mat with bolster | $64.99 at Petbarn | New; no reviews |
| Paws for Life Cooling Dog Bed (90×65 cm) | Cooling bed | $29.99 at Pet Circle | Cheaper; one size; new, no reviews |
| Coolaroo Original (Medium, 110×65 cm) | Raised mesh bed | $49.95 at T&W (sale) | Better for outdoors; about 6,300 reviews averaging 4.3 |
If your dog will use a raised bed and spends time outside, the Coolaroo costs less and is far better proven. Choose the Lola for indoors, crates and dogs that prefer lying flat.
Running costs
There’s no power or refrigeration to pay for. The real cost is replacement: a gel mat that gets punctured or starts leaking has to be thrown away. Because there are no owner reviews yet, we can’t estimate how long it lasts. Treat it as a summer-by-summer purchase until reviews show otherwise.
Cleaning, care and when to replace it
- Wipe it with a damp cloth. Don’t bleach, tumble dry or iron it, and dry it flat in shade.
- Check it regularly for punctures, splits or leaking gel. Petbarn advises replacing it if any part is damaged.
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn’t
Buy it if: your dog rests indoors, in a crate or in the car, prefers lying flat, or won’t use a raised bed. The XXLarge suits big dogs.
Skip it if: your dog chews or digs at bedding, it rests outside in the sun, or you need dependable cooling on 35°C-plus days. Raised beds and shade do better then.
Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and British Bulldogs are at much higher risk of heatstroke (Hall, Carter and O’Neill, Animals, 2020). A cooling mat can make rest more comfortable, but as Petbarn’s own label says, it doesn’t prevent overheating. See our guide to the best dog cooling beds and mats in Australia.

Do gel cooling mats work for dogs in Australian heat?+
They help, within limits. Gel mats feel cool at first and gradually warm up as they absorb your dog's body heat. Petbarn says the Lola's cooling effect weakens once the room is above 35°C. On very hot days, shade, water and a cool indoor space matter more than any mat.
Do I need to put the Juni Lola mat in the fridge?+
No. It's pressure activated and needs no water, power or refrigeration. Petbarn's care notes say not to freeze or heat it.
Is a cooling gel mat safe for a dog that chews?+
No. Petbarn warns that the mat may be harmful if swallowed and that small parts can be a choking or blockage risk. Choose a raised bed for a dog that chews. If your dog swallows any gel or mat material, contact your vet.
What size Juni Lola mat should I buy?+
Measure your dog lying stretched out. The Large (85×50 cm) suits small dogs, the XLarge (110×60 cm) suits most medium dogs, and the XXLarge (130×75 cm) suits large breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers.
Can I use the cooling mat outside?+
Only in shade. Petbarn says to keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from excessive heat. For a dog that rests outdoors, a raised bed in the shade is usually the better choice.
