DOG BEDS ORTHOPAEDIC BEDS — LARGE BREED Research-based review

Best orthopaedic dog beds for large breeds in Australia (2026)

PRODUCT REVIEW — DOG BEDS

Four orthopaedic beds for large dogs sold in Australia, compared on support, size, waterproofing and price.

// OUR PICKS
SELECTION_METHODOLOGY

We compared each bed using the manufacturer's specifications, Australian retailer listings and owner reviews on Amazon Australia. To be included, a bed needed foam suited to dogs over 25 kg, enough room for a large dog to lie stretched out, and reliable availability in Australia. Prices were checked in October 2026. We have not tested these beds ourselves.

What we compared

We looked at five things that matter most for a large dog’s bed:

What we checked What it means Why it matters for big dogs
Foam type Memory foam, egg crate foam, high-density foam or the maker’s own design Big dogs flatten ordinary foam within months. Memory foam and high-density foam hold up much better under 30 to 60 kg
Size Whether a dog over 55 cm at the shoulder can lie fully stretched out on its side A bed that’s too small forces your dog to curl up, which undoes much of the benefit
Waterproofing A waterproof lining or coating protecting the foam Big dogs drool more, and older dogs may have accidents; wet foam breaks down and can go mouldy
Cover Whether it’s removable and machine washable, and how it handles hair Large dogs shed a lot, so a cover you can’t wash quickly becomes unhygienic
Non-slip base Grip that stops the bed sliding A heavy dog jumping onto a bed pushes it sideways, and an unsecured bed slides on hard floors

1. FEANDREA Orthopaedic Dog Bed (PGW078G02): top pick

Type: Memory foam sofa-style bed with raised bolster edges | Price: $90–$130 | Size: 120 × 85 × 20 cm

The FEANDREA PGW078G02 offers the best mix of size, foam quality and easy cleaning for a large dog. At 120 × 85 cm, it’s one of the biggest orthopaedic beds readily available on Amazon Australia, with room for a Labrador or German Shepherd to lie fully stretched out on its side. The memory foam moulds to your dog’s body, spreading its weight across the whole surface instead of pressing on the hips and shoulders.

The raised bolster edges give your dog somewhere to rest its head and make the bed feel snug. A waterproof TPU lining protects the foam, the whole cover comes off for machine washing, and rubber dots underneath stop it sliding on hard floors.

2. StormHero Orthopedic Dog Bed XL: budget pick

Type: Structured foam bed with L-shaped bolster | Price: $65–$85 | Size: 105 × 75 × 20 cm

The StormHero XL is the best value in this guide. At about half the price of premium beds, it gives solid orthopaedic support, with nearly 700 Amazon Australia reviews and a consistent rating above 4 stars. The L-shaped bolster supports the head on two sides, and the 365-day warranty is generous for the price.

The catch is size. At 105 × 75 cm it suits dogs of 25 to 40 kg. For dogs over 40 kg, choose the larger StormHero 121 × 89 cm (B0F5WY5MZX) or the FEANDREA PGW078G02.

3. Rover Pet Products PlushMat!: premium pick

Type: Handmade high-density foam bed with certified non-toxic materials | Price: $250–$370 (Large/XL), often discounted | Size: 103 × 73 × 10 cm (L) or 123 × 85 × 10 cm (XL)

The Rover PlushMat! is the only bed in this guide that’s made in Australia. It’s handmade in the Hunter Valley, NSW, by a small family business that has been making beds for more than a decade, using Australian-made high-density foam that Rover says is independently pressure tested and certified non-toxic. Its 5-year no-flatten guarantee is the strongest in this guide. Spread over five years, it works out at about $49 to $74 a year.

Available direct from roverpetproducts.com.au, with free shipping on beds Australia-wide.

4. FEANDREA FluffyHug XL (PGW233G01): best for warm climates

Type: Egg crate foam sofa-style bed with plush cover and raised edges | Price: $80–$110 | Size: 106 × 80 × 23 cm

The FEANDREA FluffyHug puts comfort ahead of maximum support. Its egg crate foam gives firm, even support while letting air flow, so it holds less heat than solid memory foam. For large dogs in warmer parts of Australia (Queensland, the Northern Territory, northern NSW), that’s a genuine advantage. The plush cover is noticeably softer, and the 23 cm raised edges go all the way round. It flattens sooner than memory foam under heavy dogs.

// COMMON QUESTIONS
What foam density should an orthopaedic bed have for a large dog?+

A density of at least 35 kg/m³ is a common guideline for dogs over 25 kg, so the foam holds its shape under their weight. Memory foam and high-density foam generally meet this, while polyester fibre fill and low-density foam flatten within months under a heavy dog. Egg crate foam feels supportive at first and stays cooler, but it flattens faster than solid memory foam under dogs over 40 kg.

How big should an orthopaedic bed be for a Labrador or German Shepherd?+

Big enough for your dog to lie on its side with its legs fully stretched out. For a typical Labrador (55 to 62 cm at the shoulder), that means at least 100 cm long and 70 cm wide. A German Shepherd (60 to 65 cm at the shoulder) needs at least 110 cm. If the bed's too small, your dog has to curl up, which puts pressure back on the hips and shoulders.

Do orthopaedic dog beds actually help with hip dysplasia and arthritis?+

They help. A supportive bed spreads your dog's weight more evenly than a flat cushion or the floor, so there's less pressure on sore hips and shoulders. Vets commonly recommend a good bed as one part of managing hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia or arthritis. It doesn't treat the condition, but it can mean better sleep and less stiffness when your dog gets up.

How often should you replace an orthopaedic bed for a large dog?+

It depends on the foam and your dog's weight. Memory foam beds under a 30 to 40 kg dog typically last 2 to 3 years. High-density Australian foam, such as the Rover PlushMat!, can last 5 to 10 years. Budget egg crate foam may flatten within 12 to 18 months under a heavy dog. A simple test: after your dog gets up, the foam should spring back within about 15 seconds. If it stays dented, it's no longer giving proper support.

Does a large dog's orthopaedic bed need to be waterproof?+

It's a good idea. Moisture is one of the main reasons foam breaks down early or goes mouldy, and big dogs drool more while older dogs may have accidents. A waterproof lining between the cover and the foam helps the bed last longer. Beds without one, such as the Rover PlushMat!, use rot-resistant foam instead, but you should still watch for moisture in humid areas or add a protector.
